Isidro “Chilo” Alaniz,
Past-President of the Webb County Bar Association
Laredo, Texas
Michael M. Guerra, part of a South Texas pioneer family, was born and raised in McAllen, Texas. He resides there with his wife and three children. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Mr. Guerra, an American Jurisprudence Award recipient in Constitutional law, received his law degree from Texas Southern University in 1993. Soon after being licensed as an attorney by the State Bar in 1993, he began trying cases to jury verdict all across South Texas. Since then, Michael has been the lead lawyer in dozens of cases that resulted in successful jury verdicts, and in 2000, he became certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law.
Part of Mr. Guerra’s experience is that he has been the lawyer responsible for many multiples of cases resulting in life changing financial recoveries for hundreds of clients. For over a decade, Michael has been involved at the highest level of civil litigation. For example, he was counsel for the Plaintiffs in a case styled Coria, et al., v. Key Energy, et al., that was named one of Texas Lawyer's “Top Verdicts and Settlements of 2000.” Mr. Guerra was then in the national spotlight as a key member of the plaintiffs’ trial team in the first Firestone tire/Ford Explorer case to reach a jury. Michael has since prosecuted rollover cases in multiple states, leading the way in cases where families have been destroyed by defective products. In fact, as a condition of one of his settlements, an automotive manufacturer initiated of a vehicle safety recall to fix a dangerous fuel system, potentially saving future vehicle occupants from injury and/or death from post collision fuel fed fires.
Mr. Guerra has also taken the lead in non-automotive related product liability cases, engineering one of, if not the largest, single-family, personal injury/wrongful death settlements in Texas history. Michael is licensed to practice in the state courts of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He was honored with an invitation to become a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and is a founding member of the Rio Grande Valley chapter of this prestigious organization. He is also member of the Attorney Information Exchange Group (AIEG), the Texas Trial Lawyer’s Association (TTLA) where he was formerly on the Board of Directors of TTLA Advocates, and the South Texas Trial Lawyer’s Association. Michael has lectured on numerous occasions on many topics in the field of personal injury litigation across Texas. He is fluent in written and spoken Spanish. |
