Joey Gonzalez was born in McAllen and raised in Starr County, Texas. Mr. Gonzalez attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army in 1991. He successfully completed the United States Army Northern Warfare training school in Fort Greely, Alaska. Mr. Gonzalez received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1993. He is a 1998 graduate of St. Mary’s University School of Law. Mr. Gonzalez was an Associate Editor for the St. Mary’s University Law Journal and was Vice-Chairman of the St. Mary’s University Board of Advocates. In the fall semester of 1997, he served as a judicial intern for Justice Nathan L. Hecht at the Texas Supreme Court. Upon graduation, Mr. Gonzalez served as a briefing attorney for the Honorable Filemon B. Vela, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Texas, in the Brownsville and McAllen divisions. In 1999, Mr. Gonzalez accepted a position as an associate with the San Antonio law firm of Allen, Stein, Durbin & Hunnicutt, P.C., where he practiced primarily civil litigation. In 2001, Mr. Gonzalez accepted a position as a partner with the predecessor firm of Watts Guerra Craft in its Hidalgo County office.
In 2008, Mr. Gonzalez was appointed by the Texas Supreme Court to serve on the State Bar of Texas – Grievance Oversight Committee. In 2007, Mr. Gonzalez was elected to serve as Chairman of the State Bar of Texas District 12-B Grievance Committee for the 2007-2008 term. He also served as panel chair during the 2006-2007 term. In 2008, Mr. Gonzalez was elected President of the Hidalgo County Bar Association and Hidalgo County Bar Foundation. He also serves as President of the St. Mary’s University School of Law Alumni Association-Rio Grande Valley Chapter and as Vice-President of the University of Texas-Pan American Alumni Association Board of Trustees. Mr. Gonzalez has been a member of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program Board of Directors since 2006.
In 2007 and 2008 respectively, Law & Politics selected Mr. Gonzalez as a “Texas Rising Star-Super Lawyer”. Rising Stars are chosen by their peers as being among the top up-and-coming lawyers in the state of Texas. Only 2.5 percent of lawyers in the State of Texas are named to the Rising Stars list.
Mr. Gonzalez currently practices in the area of personal injury with an emphasis on product liability, commercial trucking negligence, nursing home negligence, premises liability, pharmaceutical litigation, and general negligence. He has handled numerous cases in California, Utah, New York, Arizona, and New Mexico for the last eight years, having been admitted to practice pro hac vice in those jurisdictions. Mr. Gonzalez is licensed to practice law in the state courts of Texas and in the United States District Courts for the Southern and Western Districts of Texas.
Mr. Gonzalez is fluent in written and spoken Spanish. |
